In line with the European Union priorities implemented in the national field, from the Fundación ONCE we have closely followed the fast development of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and since the beginning we insisted that people with disabilities needed to be part of it.

The Guide that is now published is a milestone within the awareness-raising activities addressed to economic and social stakeholders and promoted by our entity as part of the Operative Programme on the Fight Against Discrimination co-financed by the European Social Fund. The objective of this programme is the social and labour participation of people with disabilities. Moreover, the Programme aims at becoming one of the tools used to improve the integration rates of people with disabilities.

There is no doubt that people with disabilities, who amount to 10% of the European population, form a group that has to be taken into account when designing and implementing a good CSR policy.

Therefore, the disability organisations have tried to have an influence on the various public debate initiatives that have recently taken place in Spain, in order to guarantee that people with disabilities will not be left out of this debate. Besides, this debate has created high expectations within this group.

We must underline the growing interest of many Spanish companies on disability matters, as show the various new initiatives started (a clear example are the Inserta Agreements, key for the Operating Programme) and several surveys carried out on CSR fields.

This guide aims at taking advantage of this momentum to make progress and strengthen the company's actions on CSR and Disability matters (CSR-D).

The systematic inclusion of disability in a company’s strategy brings countless advantages. 40 million of people with disabilities and their families form a very important group from a marketing point of view. And we must not forget the opportunity brought by their active participation in order to create inclusive and jointly responsible social environments.

In any case, the consideration of people with disabilities as potential clients by the companies and the fact they take accessibility into account is not only a rights issue, but also a competitive advantage to be considered.

A company that adequately includes disability as part of its CSR policy will also enjoy the advantage of being ahead of the regulation that will soon be developed on this matter, a greater part of which is a consequence of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which came into effect on May the 3rd of 2008 and of the regulation promoted from the European Institutions on equality of treatment and non-discrimination.

Fundación ONCE wants to achieve two goals with this Guide:

  1. To offer a practical tool for the companies that want to integrate people with disabilities into their CSR policy.
  2. To increase the employment levels and quality for people with disabilities and also to contribute to the quality improvement of products and services they demand as consumers.

The cooperation with the organizations that form the disability sector favours the effective and flexible achievement of the objectives on this matter. From Fundación ONCE we lend our support and help to the companies that wish to consolidate a clear commitment with disability.
